SOUTH CAROLINA: A 17-year-old US mariner has become the youngest person to sail around the world after completing a grueling 13-month voyage.

Sandy-haired teenager Zac Sunderland arrived in South Carolina harbor aboard his 36-foot sloop Intrepid.

During his 28,000-nautical-mile journey, he braved storms, equipment failures, close calls with freighters and a run-in with suspected pirates.

Fewer than 250 people have sailed solo around the globe, with three times that many scaling the top of Mount Everest.

Sunderland left Marina Del Rey, just south of Los Angeles, on June 14, last year, and celebrated his 17th birthday at sea. His return was delayed when his single-masted boat sustained a broken bulkhead in rough seas off Mexico.

The first person to sail around the world was Captain Joshua Slocum, a 19th century sea man who started his career in sailing at the age of 16.
