NOTTINGHAM: A British student has come up with the next big thing in ‘green energy’ - yellow fuel!
The fuel uses banana skins and can be used for both cooking and heating.
Nottingham University PhD student Joel Chaney may just have developed the most fruitful idea the green economy has seen since solar power - banana skin fuel.
The skins are mashed with sawdust and paper, then shaped into briquettes for domestic use.
As bananas are grown in some of the world’s poorest countries and the fuel itself is created using minimal technology, it is hoped the briquettes could be used across the developing world, providing cheap fuel whilst limiting deforestation.
Dr Mike Clifford of the university’s Faculty of Engineering says the idea is a simple solution to a worldwide problem.
He said that the benefits of Joel’s work are that he came up with something that can be made by anyone in their backyard with no tooling at all really - you just leave some bananas to rot down, mash them up, combine them with any dry matter you have got, and that’s it.
Already, the banana briquettes have generated interest from all over the world, particularly from Africa and South East Asia.
For Joel himself, the future looks sweet
